OUR MISSION
The mission of OTC Derm is to provide affordable, evidence & experience-based solutions for common skin conditions.
OTC Derm was created by a group of board-certified dermatologists who realized the need to guide skin care choices that are both affordable and effective.
These recommendations are based on evidence-based medicine and a combined 45 years of clinical experience in treating skin conditions.
We at OTC Derm believe that OTC dermatology products are generally underutilized or misutilized. In some circumstances, inaccessibility to professional care or expert advice prevents the appropriate use of OTC medications. In other cases, the expectation of patients for something “stronger” than OTC medication results in prescription treatments that may work well but are not always cost-effective. In fact, some of our best OTC dermatology treatments were previously available by prescription only. Once such treatments become available OTC, the product and its efficacy do not change, but the price usually does, significantly.
The efficacy of over the counter treatments for skin conditions should be neither over- nor underestimated.
There are many skin conditions that do not respond well to OTC treatments. Some cases are more severe, more extensive or, for unknown reasons, are simply resistant to treatment. Advances in dermatology have brought prescription medications that provide spectacular results for many skin conditions. The utility of such powerful prescription medications is irrefutable.
The OTC Derm website presents a reliable source for OTC dermatology recommendations. For each common skin condition, there is a general overview of the problem along with treatment options that include our favorite OTC products. This website is an educational resource. It is in no way meant to proffer a diagnosis or replace a visit to a doctor’s office. There are no guarantees that our treatment suggestions will be effective for you. Never delay in seeing your doctor for diagnosis and treatment. A board-certified dermatologist may be just what you need.
